Narrative tournament

The Tournament

A more casual take on the usual format — focused on the experience, and on a pressure-free atmosphere. All skill levels welcome.

What's a narrative tournament?

The in-game rules are the same as a traditional 40k game. What changes is everything around it: a governing narrative that carries you through different dynamics and mechanics across your games. Random events happen. The pace shifts. Twists strike. It might not benefit you. It might have dire consequences. But if the gods favour you, it might be exactly what you need to be remembered in legends.

What you need

  • 2000 points, battle-forged, all official detachment and army rules

  • Bring another separate INFANTRY model (25 or 32mm) that represents you, that will NOT be included in your army.

This will be needed for other mechanics surrounding the games.

  • A painted army is not mandatory

  • You don't need to submit your list in advance

  • Bring a copy of your list for your opponent

Game Mechanics

Scoring

We will use the normal Games Workshop 11th edition scoring system.

SNEAK PEAK - The Fenrisian Market

The villagers are here to help! Use your currency to ask favours of the Runemaster, the Warmaster and the Forgemaster, and spend them when a game turns against you. Lose a game and you gain two favours. Win and you gain one. More can be earned through missions and objectives.

SNEAK PEAK - The Blackfrost

The shard stands at the center of the battleground, and the corruption grows outward from it as the weekend goes on. Help your team get to the shard, or go in alone and hope for the best.

F.A.Q.

Do I need a painted army?

No. A painted army is recommended to a battle-ready standard — we firmly believe painted models have better aim — but no points are removed for grey plastic, and none are awarded for a painted one.

What army do I bring?

A 2000 point battle-forged list, following all official detachment and army rules. You do not submit it in advance, but bring a copy for your opponent so nothing is a surprise mid-game.

Is there a rules cut-off?

Yes. There is a cut-off before 2 weeks before the event so nobody is caught out by a balance update mid-month. Changes after that date are ignored for the weekend.

Can I use converted or kit-bashed models?

Please do. They only need to keep the same proportions and base size, and you do not need them approved beforehand. Try to stay as WYSIWYG as you can, and if a model is not, have a way to show what it is and what wargear it carries.

Do I need to bring terrain?

No. Every battlefield is set up by the staff and you will not rearrange it. Objective markers are provided, though bringing your own is never a bad idea. Every table is different, so agree on cover and lines of sight with your opponent before you start.

How many games will I play?

4 games across the weekend, two each day, with time between them to eat, talk with a drink, or wander around! Pairings are announced before each round.

When do I need to be at the table?

Fifteen minutes before game time. Each scenario opens with a briefing, and it carries information you will want.

Is food included?

Lunch is not included with the tournament pass. You must purchase a meal pass. Food is served through the lunch time. Vegetarian options are available — tell us when you buy your pass so the kitchen knows.

What if my opponent speaks the other language?

The event runs in French and English and you may be paired across the two. If it causes a problem, tell the TO and we will make adjustments.

What if a rule is unclear?

Ask the TO. We will look it up while you keep playing rather than hold up your game. The TO has the final word.

What is included with a workshop?

Every workshop includes free goodies and promo items, a meet and greet with the artist teaching it, and access to the bar on site and our vending kiosk. Materials needed are listed on each course.

Can I do both the tournament and the workshops?

They are two separate paths and they are mutually exclusive. Check the schedule carefully and choose the path you are most interested in.

Where is it, and is there parking?

Collège Jean-Eudes, 3535 Bd Rosemont, Montréal. Free private parking on site — follow the signage to the tournament hall.
